THE ANCIENT KOKKINOKASTRO IN ALONNISOS

Kokkinokastro is the Greek επιπλα word for red castle. It is a major city with a very big history. Its history probably began in the Bronze Age. Excavations in the area indicate that there was a form of not continuous, but very important habitation. According to ceramics that were found and elements of combustion show that that during the early and middle bronze period, there were activities which can be connected with human inhabitants. Moreover, it is also discovered that there was a mix of Paleolithic and Neolithic tools, ceramics of the classic period. This must be due to a kind of transferor these tools as Kokkinokastro was still connected with Alonnisos. The major discovery though is about a city that archaeologists discover on the little island of Kokkinokastro. This city is probably one of the two major cities that existed in Alonnisos. This city had large tall walls that protected her from invasions. These buildings can still be distinguished. In the city were other constructions buildings, squares and temples. Unknown natural disasters have occurred and a major part of the island is now in the sea. People in παιδικα επιπλα Alonnisos were experts not only in shipbuilding but in pottery too. Findings from the excavations of the 4thcentury B.C shows that ceramics were very much developed.
